New Publication in English on Higher Education in Sweden
Sweden’s Academic Landscape: Higher Education and Research Explained is a publication that provides an overview in English of the Swedish system of higher education and research. It is intended for a wide and varied readership, and is available in both digital and printed formats.
Sweden’s Academic Landscape: Higher Education and Research Explained is now complete. The publication, written in English, offers an overview of the Swedish higher education and research sector. It is a revised version of the Swedish Higher Education Authority’s earlier annual reports in English, which have been published for many years. The publication explains how the sector is structured and highlights features that distinguish Sweden from many other countries.
The publication is aimed at an international audience interested in how Swedish higher education and research organised, including government agencies, higher education institutions, and relevant networks and organisations. It is also intended for Swedish readers who wish to describe the Swedish higher education sector in English.
A great deal of useful information
Sara Ahlstedt, who served as project manager for Sweden’s Academic Landscape: Higher Education and Research Explained, notes that the publication contains a great deal of useful information for readers who want to learn more about the Swedish higher education and research sector. For example, it includes chapters on staff at Swedish higher education institutions, internationalisation and mobility within Swedish higher education, and the financing of higher education and research in Sweden.
Preliminary work for the report included a short survey sent to relevant government agencies and organisations, as well as input from an external reference group. The aim was to tailor the report more effectively to its intended audiences and, in doing so, make it more useful to the sector and other stakeholders. This proved to be of valuable input for the development process.
“We have focused on issues that the target groups highlighted as interesting and important to include, as well as what we ourselves consider relevant for an international audience. Based on this, we chose to present fewer trends over time and instead provide more of a snapshot of the current situation in the Swedish higher education sector. We also sought to include features and examples specific to Sweden. Where possible, we also make comparisons between the Swedish system and those of other countries,” says Sara.
A new edition every two years
A new edition of the publication will be issued every two years, and the next one will include a more comprehensive account of research and third-cycle education in Sweden than this first edition.
“Each edition will be updated with the latest data, as well as any sector developments that need to be included to ensure a comprehensive overview. Future editions will also contain one chapter with content unique to each release. That chapter will highlight a specific topic, or relevant current issue, within the Swedish higher education sector that we consider to be of particular international interest,” Sara concludes.
